His ‘Clash of Civilizations’ inspired me to a new way of thinking about society and civilizations, although I remember to have found it lacking in specificity. Only years later I do understand why I found it lacking at some points, but have also learned to appreciate his contribution to political science discours.

A few years later I was impressed by his explanation of the dynamics of identity in ‘Who are we?’ I will not soon forget his example of rising flag sales in America the day after the attacks on the Twin Towers.

December 24th, Samuel Huntington passed away. I would like to thank him for his ideas, and for his inspiration.
